Invited Talk by Larissa Bolte on AI Ethics
On December 1, Larissa Bolte (Institute
for Science and Ethics, University of Bonn) will give a talk on
A General-Purpose Introduction to AI Ethics
in room 6470, MZH, at 2pm.
Abstract
Who can really say what is going on in AI ethics? As ever more AI applications enter our lifeworld and everyday activities, questions and concerns about the ethical impact of these technologies proliferate. Consequently, a great variety of issues and topics fall under the large umbrella of “AI ethics”: Existential threat, worries about machine consciousness, the reliability and explainability of AI outputs, debates about surveillance versus self-determination, or, lately, the sustainability of AI systems represent only a fraction of what is being discussed in the field. Instead of reading off a list like this, this talk presents a mapping of the current AI ethics landscape. It distinguishes three distinct approaches which differ not only in their choice of topic but disagree on principle about which ethical issues are important, and which perspective brings them into view properly. Thus, it provides a general introduction to a field which grows ever larger by the day.
